Sunset in Cacilhas: Where to Catch the View over Lisbon and Where to Eat Afterwards

Watching the sunset in Cacilhas means standing outside the city looking at it, rather than inside it looking at the river. The sun drops behind the Lisbon skyline and the 25 de Abril Bridge, which creates a silhouette effect in the 30 to 40 minutes before the official sunset time. The best places to see it are all on the riverfront, a few minutes on foot from the ferry terminal, and dinner is right there afterwards, up the hill on Rua Cândido dos Reis.

What time should you go?

Sunset shifts considerably through the year. Between June and August it falls around 8.30pm to 9pm; in December and January, between 5.15pm and 5.45pm. The window that matters opens about 40 minutes before that, when the low light catches the Lisbon rooftops across the water.

To get a spot without waiting, the safest bet is to arrive an hour before sunset. In summer that means being on the riverfront by about 7.30pm. Weekend evenings are the busiest, driven by people crossing from central Lisbon by ferry for exactly this. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, at the same hour, the difference in crowds is obvious.

Where are the best spots to watch the sunset in Cacilhas?

There are three, all free and all within walking distance of each other:

• Cais do Ginjal, at water level, is the most direct: the quay lines up with Lisbon across the Tejo and the cacilheiro ferries pass in the foreground. It reopened to the public on 31 July 2025, after four months closed over collapse risk, and looks considerably barer today, since a large part of the old warehouses was demolished during the works.
• Jardim do Rio, at the foot of the cliff, with grass and benches facing the river, is the most comfortable option for waiting out the hour.
• Largo da Boca do Vento, at the top of the cliff, gives the highest angle over the estuary. The panoramic lift connects the two levels, covers a 50 metre drop inside a glazed capsule and is free, running every day from 9.30am to 11.30pm. You can go up after sunset, with the bridge lights already on.

The view from any of the three combines the same three elements: the 25 de Abril Bridge in the distance, the Lisbon skyline across the Tejo, and the cacilheiros crossing the river every 15 to 20 minutes.

Which wine should you order afterwards?

Vinho verde is the most consistent choice for the end of the afternoon, for concrete reasons: its high acidity and low alcohol, between 9% and 11.5%, hold up in the heat without weighing you down before a meal. It is served well chilled, between 7°C and 10°C, which makes a real difference on a sunny day.

If the table already has grilled fish or shellfish, vinho verde works alongside the dish’s acidity rather than competing with it. For a more substantial dinner, with bacalhau or meat, a regional red from the Alentejo or the Douro at room temperature handles the shift from afternoon into evening better.

Where to eat afterwards

Rua Cândido dos Reis is where Cacilhas’s traditional cooking is concentrated, a few minutes on foot from any of the three viewpoints and from the ferry terminal. A Toca is at number 93, serving Portuguese cooking in Cacilhas since 1985.

Anyone coming from Lisbon crosses from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas in about 10 minutes by ferry, which makes it easy to leave work, catch the sunset on the riverfront and sit down to eat straight afterwards.

Summary: time, place and wine

On summer weekends it is worth booking a table in advance: that is the hour when Cacilhas takes in the most people coming over from Lisbon specifically for the view.
